About Us

The Kenya Youth Network for Rio+20 and Beyond is a coalition of youth organizations in the country bound by the Nairobi Declaration and working to enhance good governance, innovations, advocacy and public education towards achieving Green Economy; pathway to sustainable development.

It was after the Organisation of African Youth in partnership with Youth Alive! Kenya and Peace Child International convened the Kenya Youth Strategy Meeting for Rio+20 in October 2011. Hosted by the UN- Habitat, the meeting offered an excellent opportunity to mobilize and provide young people with a platform to actively and substantively participate in the preparatory process for Rio+20 and to share a broad and long term view of the levels of development by identifying strategies for tackling sustainable development challenges in the country.

The outcome of the meeting was the release of the Nairobi Declaration. The Declaration reflects concerns of Kenyan youth in regards to issues such as the need for a Green Economy, urbanization, sustainability, green jobs and the roles and responsibilities of youth in bringing this about.

The Network aims to advocate, mobilize and provide young people with a platform to actively participate in the preparatory process for Rio+20. It also seeks to advocate for long term national transitional plan towards a green economy in Kenya.

VISION:
To provide opportunities for Kenyan youth to realize their full potential by taking actions towards achieving sustainable development.

GOAL:
To advocate for the implementation of the Nairobi Declaration and other Sustainable
Development Action Plans through partnership.

MISSION:
To promote and achieve a Green Economy that results in sustainability through good governance, innovations, advocacy and sustainable development education.

OBJECTIVES:
1. To mobilize and create awareness for young people to take ACTION for long term sustainable development activities.
2. To provide an effective platform for youth participation in sustainable development.
Process of the Rio + 20 that is the key for its success – and this can only be achieved by embedding it in the hearts and minds of young development activists throughout Kenya.
3. To champion for the development of a joint implementation plan together with government and other stakeholders towards sustainable development.
4. To develop incubation centres for young innovators to develop their ideas in order to reach their dream.
5. To promote the creation of Green entrepreneurship and jobs for sustainability to reduce the high rate of unemployment and eradicate poverty in the country.
